A Liturgy of Confession (Based on Mt. 6:19-7:12)

I was looking through some old assignments from my first two years at MHGS, and came across this liturgy I put together for a class my first year.  It was great to revisit it.

*The “All:” response is from a Celtic prayer.

—————-

Leader: Jesus said, “Store up for yourselves treasure in heaven, for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” We confess this day that our hearts are often captivated by treasures on earth. Help us to have hearts that love well, that are humble, that seek You first, that yearn for peace, and that are merciful.

All: Renew our hearts again this day, so where we have failed, we may begin again.

Leader: Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters.” We confess this day that our hearts are often divide between what You desire for us and what we desire for ourselves. Help us to have hearts that are purely devoted to You; that we the created may be reconciled to You our loving Creator.

All: Renew our hearts again this day, so where we have failed, we may begin again.

Leader: Jesus said, “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat and drink, or about your body, what you will wear. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.” We confess this day that our hearts are often discontent. Help us to have hearts that are willing to reach out in faith and trust your perfect provision for our needs and well-being.

All: Renew our hearts again this day, so where we have failed, we may begin again.

Leader: Jesus said, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.” We confess this day that our hearts are often overcome with hypocrisy. Help us to have hearts that are gracious and merciful, that our thoughts, words, and actions be aligned with the example of Christ.

All: Renew our hearts again this day, so where we have failed, we may begin again.

Leader: Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.” We confess this day that our hearts are often afraid to come to You, to seek You first, to ask for the things that we need. Help us to have hearts that are in relentless pursuit of You, that propel us closer into Your arms, and that cry out to You when we cannot go any further.

All: Renew our hearts again this day, so where we have failed, we may begin again.

Leader: Jesus said, “In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.” We confess this day that our hearts are often full of selfish ambitions. Help us to have hearts that are overflowing with compassion, empathy, and love for all those around us. Help us to see our brothers and sisters through Your eyes.

All: Renew our hearts again this day, so where we have failed, we may begin again. Amen.
